Joseph Conrad

1857–1924 · 20th century

Joseph Conrad was a Polish-born British novelist, born Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski, who served for years as a merchant seaman before turning to writing in English. His works, including Lord Jim, Nostromo and Heart of Darkness, explore moral ambiguity and empire. His 1890 voyage up the Congo River for a Belgian trading company inspired Heart of Darkness.
