Altona

Also known as Altona, Hamburg

Altona is a district of Hamburg on the north bank of the Elbe, which grew in the 16th century as a fishing and trading settlement beside the city under the counts of Holstein-Pinneberg. Passing to the Danish crown in 1640, it received town rights in 1664 and became the second city of the Danish realm, rivalling Hamburg in trade. It was Prussian from 1867 and was merged into Hamburg by the Greater Hamburg Act of 1937.
