Alūksne

Also known as Aluksne, Marienburg

Alūksne is a town in north-eastern Latvia, near the borders with Estonia and Russia, on the shore of Lake Alūksne. It lay in the land of Atzele, inhabited by Latgalians and known to Rus' sources. The Livonian Order built a stone castle on an island in the lake in 1342, and in the 1680s the pastor Ernst Glück translated the Bible into Latvian there.
