Antinous

c. 111–130 · 2nd century

Antinous was a young Greek from Bithynia who became the favourite of the emperor Hadrian. He drowned in the Nile in 130 CE during Hadrian's tour of Egypt, in circumstances that remain unclear. Hadrian had him deified, founded the city of Antinoopolis in his memory and promoted his cult across the eastern provinces, where many statues of him survive.
