Antiochus I Theos of Commagene

r. c. 70–38 BCE · 1st century BCE

Antiochus I Theos was king of Commagene from about 70 to 38 BCE. Claiming descent from both the Persian Achaemenids and the Seleucids, he created a royal cult that merged Greek and Persian gods with himself, and built the great tomb sanctuary on Mount Nemrut. He ruled from Samosata as a client of Rome, which recognised him after Pompey's eastern campaigns.
