Anwaruddin Khan

c. 1672–1749 · 18th century · Also known as Muhammad Anwaruddin

Anwaruddin Khan was Nawab of the Carnatic, ruling from Arcot, from 1744 to 1749, installed by Asaf Jah I, the Nizam of Hyderabad. In 1746 his large army was routed by a small French force at the Adyar river, an early sign of the superiority of European-trained troops. He was killed at the Battle of Ambur in 1749 fighting Chanda Sahib and Muzaffar Jung, who were backed by the French.
