Arcot

Arcot is a town on the Palar river in Tamil Nadu, southern India, which became the capital of the Nawabs of the Carnatic under Mughal rule. During the Carnatic Wars, Robert Clive seized it in 1751 and held it through a long siege by forces of Chanda Sahib and the French, raising British prestige in India. The Nawabs later moved their court to Madras.
