Carnatic Wars

1746–1763 · 18th century

The Carnatic Wars were three conflicts in south-eastern India in which the British and French East India Companies backed rival claimants to the Carnatic and Hyderabad. Robert Clive's defence of Arcot in 1751 and the British victory at Wandiwash in 1760 broke French power. The wars made the British company the leading European force in southern India.
