Fort St George
Fort St George is the fortress begun by the English East India Company in 1640 at Madraspatnam on the Coromandel Coast, the first English fortress in India. The city of Madras, now Chennai, grew around it, and it was the seat of the Madras Presidency. Its St Mary's Church, consecrated in 1680, is the oldest Anglican church in India, and the fort now houses the Tamil Nadu legislature.
