Carnatic Sultanate

c. 1692–1855 · 17th century · Also known as Arcot State

The Carnatic Sultanate was a state in south-eastern India ruled by the Nawabs of the Carnatic, or of Arcot, from about 1692 to 1855. First Mughal governors, the nawabs became independent rulers but were drawn into the Carnatic Wars between Britain and France and fell under British control. The East India Company took over their lands in 1801 and abolished the title in 1855.
