Muhammad Ali Khan Wallajah

1717–1795 · 18th century · Also known as Muhammad Ali Wallajah

Muhammad Ali Khan Wallajah was Nawab of the Carnatic from 1749 to 1795. Backed by the British East India Company against his French-supported rival Chanda Sahib, he won the throne through the Carnatic Wars, which included Robert Clive's defence of Arcot in 1751. He moved his court to Madras, but heavy debts to the Company and its servants left him ever more dependent on the British.
