Apis

Also known as Apis bull

Apis was a sacred bull worshipped at Memphis in ancient Egypt as the living manifestation of the god Ptah. A single bull with particular markings was chosen for the role, and on its death it was mummified and buried with great ceremony in the Serapeum at Saqqara. Greek writers accused the Persian kings Cambyses II and Artaxerxes III of killing an Apis bull, stories that may reflect hostile propaganda.
