Arequipa
Arequipa is the second-largest city of Peru, in the southern Andes at the foot of the volcano El Misti. Founded by the Spanish in 1540, it is built largely of white volcanic sillar stone, and its historic centre, with the Santa Catalina convent, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A centre of southern regionalism, it was a stronghold of the Peru–Bolivian Confederation in the 1830s.
