Bantry Bay

Bantry Bay is a long inlet of the Atlantic on the coast of County Cork in south-west Ireland. In December 1796 a French expedition under General Hoche, with Wolfe Tone on board, reached the bay to support a rising of the United Irishmen, but storms scattered the fleet and prevented any landing. An earlier French fleet had fought an English squadron there in 1689.
