Theobald Wolfe Tone

1763–1798 · 18th century · Also known as Wolfe Tone

Theobald Wolfe Tone was an Irish revolutionary, a Protestant lawyer who helped found the Society of United Irishmen in 1791. In France he persuaded the Directory to send an expedition to Ireland, which reached Bantry Bay in 1796 but could not land. Captured with a French squadron in 1798, he was sentenced to death and died of a self-inflicted wound; he is regarded as the father of Irish republicanism.
