Barings Bank

1762–1995 · 18th century · Also known as Baring Brothers

Barings Bank, founded in London in 1762, was one of Britain's oldest merchant banks and a leading lender to governments in the nineteenth century, helping to finance the Louisiana Purchase. Its heavy lending in Argentina brought it close to collapse in the crisis of 1890. It failed in 1995 after huge losses from unauthorised trading by Nick Leeson in Singapore.
