Singapore
Singapore is an island city at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, on the major sea route between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea. Founded as a British trading post in 1819, it became a key British naval base, and its fall to Japan in 1942 was a severe blow to the British Empire. Accounts of the Srivijaya Empire note its earlier role in regional maritime trade.
