Bartatua

7th century BCE · 7th century BCE · Also known as Protothyes, Partatua

Bartatua was a Scythian king of the 7th century BCE known from Assyrian texts and usually identified with Protothyes, named by Herodotus as the father of Madyes. He asked the Assyrian king Esarhaddon for the hand of an Assyrian princess, and his people thereafter generally sided with Assyria. Some scholars associate the rich burial at Ziwiye in north-western Iran with him.
