Lake Urmia
Lake Urmia is a large salt lake in north-western Iran, between the provinces of East and West Azerbaijan. In the early 1st millennium BCE the Mannaeans lived on its southern shores, and the region was contested between Assyria and Urartu and raided by Scythians. Later ruled by the Medes, Persians and local dynasties, the lake has shrunk dramatically in recent decades.
