Tushpa

Also known as Van Fortress

Tushpa was the capital of the kingdom of Urartu, built on a long limestone rock above the eastern shore of Lake Van in present-day Turkey. King Sarduri I fortified it around 840 BCE, and his successors carved their annals and tombs into the rock. The citadel, known today as Van Fortress, remained in use under later empires, and a trilingual inscription of the Persian king Xerxes is cut into its face.
