Bastam

7th century BCE · 7th century BCE

Bastam is the site of a large Urartian fortress in Iran's West Azerbaijan province, north of Khoy, built by Rusa II in the seventh century BCE. Excavated by German archaeologists between 1968 and 1978, it yielded storerooms, stables, clay bullae, seals and tablets that illuminate Urartian administration. Like other Urartian fortresses it was destroyed by fire in the late seventh century.
