Person
Xerxes I
Xerxes I was king of the Achaemenid Empire from 486 to 465 BCE, the son and successor of Darius I. He led the great invasion of Greece in 480 BCE, which won at Thermopylae and sacked Athens but was defeated at Salamis and, in 479 BCE, at Plataea. Accounts of the Achaemenid Empire discuss him in the context of the empire's military history and the limits of its westward expansion.
