Hoplite
A hoplite was a heavily armed Greek infantryman, equipped with a large round shield, spear and armour, fighting in the close formation known as the phalanx. Hoplite armies proved effective against the lighter-armed Persian infantry. They were the backbone of Greek resistance to the Achaemenid Empire during the Greco-Persian Wars.
