Lysander was a Spartan admiral and statesman who won the Peloponnesian War for Sparta. With Persian money from Cyrus the Younger he built a fleet that destroyed the Athenian navy at Aegospotami in 405 BCE, then blockaded Athens into surrender in 404 BCE. He installed pro-Spartan oligarchies across the Aegean and was killed at Haliartus in 395 BCE.
