Samo

d. c. 658 · 7th century

Samo was a Frankish merchant who, according to the Chronicle of Fredegar, led the Slavs of Central Europe in a revolt against the Avars around 623 and was then chosen as their king, ruling for some thirty-five years. In about 631 he defeated the Frankish king Dagobert I at Wogastisburg. His realm, probably centred in Moravia, Bohemia or Lower Austria, is the first known Slavic polity.
