Dagobert I

c. 603–639 · 7th century

Dagobert I was a Merovingian king of the Franks, made king of Austrasia in 623 and ruler of all the Frankish kingdoms from 629 until his death in 639. With advisers such as Eligius he strengthened royal power, and he was a patron of the abbey of Saint-Denis, where he was the first king to be buried. After him real power passed increasingly to the mayors of the palace.
