Dorestad
Dorestad was an early medieval trading settlement near present-day Wijk bij Duurstede in the Netherlands, where the Rhine and the Lek divided. Between the 7th and 9th centuries it was one of the largest emporia of north-western Europe, controlled in turn by the Frisians and the Franks, with its own mint. Viking raids from 834 and shifts in the course of the river led to its decline.
