Columbanus

543–615 · 6th century · Also known as Saint Columbanus, Columban

Columbanus was an Irish monk from Bangor who travelled to Gaul around 590 and founded monasteries at Annegray, Luxeuil and Fontaine in the Frankish kingdom of Burgundy. His strict monastic rule and Irish customs, such as the dating of Easter, brought him into conflict with Frankish bishops, and King Theuderic II and Queen Brunhild expelled him in 610. He went on to Italy, where he founded the abbey of Bobbio and died in 615.
