Frankish Kingdom of Burgundy
Origins
The Franks conquered the Kingdom of the Burgundians in 534. At the division of 561 Chlothar I's son Guntram received Burgundy with Orléans, ruling from Chalon-sur-Saône. The kingdom stretched from the Loire to the Alps and the Mediterranean.
Rule and society
Guntram, a long-reigning king later venerated as a saint, acted as mediator between his feuding brothers' kingdoms. Burgundy kept its Roman law and Gallo-Roman aristocracy and its own mayor of the palace. The Irish monk Columbanus founded Luxeuil there, but was expelled by King Theuderic II and Brunhild.
Decline and legacy
After 613 Burgundy was ruled together with Neustria by Chlothar II and his successors, though it kept a separate identity. It passed under Pippinid control, and Charles Martel subdued it in the 730s. With Pippin's accession in 751 it became a region of the Frankish realm.
