Loire
The Loire is the longest river in France, about 1,000 km long. It rises in the Massif Central and flows north and then west through Orléans, Tours and Nantes to the Atlantic at Saint-Nazaire. In antiquity many Gallic peoples lived along it, and in the Middle Ages it was a frontier and a highway. Its valley, lined with royal châteaux, is a World Heritage Site.
