Segusiavi

300 BCE – 51 BCE (approx.)

Gallic people of the Forez and Lyonnais on whose land Rome founded Lyon, the future capital of the Three Gauls.

Origins

The Segusiavi lived between the Loire and the Rhône, in the plains of the Forez and the hills west of the Saône. Caesar describes them as the first people beyond the Rhône outside the Roman Province and as clients of the Aedui.

Rule and society

Few details survive. Their territory commanded the crossing of the Saône and Rhône at the hill of Fourvière, a strategic point for trade between the Mediterranean and central Gaul.

Decline and legacy

They joined the revolt of 52 BCE with the Aedui. In 43 BCE the colony of Lugdunum (Lyon) was founded on their land, and their own chief town became Forum Segusiavorum (Feurs). Their name survives in the Forez region.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
