Bituriges Cubi

400 BCE – 52 BCE (approx.) · capital Avaricum

Powerful Gallic people of Berry whose capital Avaricum, modern Bourges, was stormed by Caesar in one of the bloodiest sieges of the Gallic War.

Origins

The Bituriges, whose name means 'kings of the world', occupied the middle Loire and Cher basins around Avaricum (Bourges). Livy tells a legend that in the 6th century BCE their king Ambigatus held supremacy over the Celts and sent his nephews Bellovesus and Segovesus to lead migrations into Italy and the Hercynian Forest. A related branch, the Bituriges Vivisci, later settled at Bordeaux.

Rule and society

Their land was rich in iron ore, and the Bituriges were renowned smiths and metalworkers. Avaricum, defended by a massive timber-laced murus gallicus rampart, was one of the largest and wealthiest oppida in Gaul.

Decline and legacy

In 52 BCE they joined Vercingetorix and burned some twenty of their own towns to starve the Romans, but spared Avaricum, which Caesar took after a hard siege, killing most of its inhabitants. Under Rome their territory became a civitas of Aquitania, the origin of the province of Berry.
