Avaricum

52 BCE · 1st century BCE

Avaricum was the chief oppidum of the Bituriges Cubi in Gaul, on the site of modern Bourges. Protected by marshes and a timber-laced murus gallicus rampart, it was one of the largest and richest towns of Gaul. In 52 BCE, during the revolt of Vercingetorix, Julius Caesar besieged and stormed it, and according to Caesar almost all its 40,000 inhabitants were killed.
