Avaris
Avaris was an ancient city in the north-eastern Nile Delta, at the modern site of Tell el-Dab'a. From the late Middle Kingdom a large population of Levantine origin settled there, and it became the seat of the Fourteenth Dynasty and then the capital of the Hyksos kings of the Fifteenth Dynasty, until Ahmose I captured it around 1550 BCE. Excavations since 1966 have found Minoan-style wall paintings there.
