Itjtawy

Also known as Amenemhat-itj-tawy

Itjtawy, short for Amenemhat-itj-tawy, 'Amenemhat seizes the Two Lands', was the royal capital of Egypt in the Twelfth and Thirteenth Dynasties. It was founded by Amenemhat I around 1980 BCE near Lisht, at the entrance to the Faiyum, moving government from Thebes back towards the old centre at Memphis. The city itself has not been located, but the royal pyramids and cemeteries at Lisht belong to it.
