Mentuhotep II

r. c. 2055–2004 BCE · 21st century BCE · Also known as Nebhepetre Mentuhotep

Mentuhotep II was a king of the Theban Eleventh Dynasty of Egypt. Around 2055 BCE he defeated the rival Herakleopolitan kings and reunited the country after the First Intermediate Period, an achievement usually taken as the start of the Middle Kingdom. His terraced mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari, near Thebes, later inspired the temple of Hatshepsut beside it.
