Mentuhotep I

late 22nd century BCE · 22nd century BCE

Mentuhotep I was a nomarch of Thebes in Upper Egypt in the late 22nd century BCE and the founder of the Eleventh Dynasty. He probably ruled only as a local governor, but later kings honoured him as an ancestor with royal titles. His successors Intef I, Intef II and Intef III built the Theban state that reunited Egypt under Mentuhotep II.
