Menton
Menton is a town on the French Riviera close to the Italian border, known for its lemons and mild climate. Held by the Grimaldi princes of Monaco from the 14th century, it rebelled in 1848, declared itself a free city with Roquebrune and passed to France in 1861 after a plebiscite, Monaco being compensated with four million francs. In the 19th century it became a popular winter resort.
