Menteshe Bey

13th century · 13th century

Menteshe Bey was a Turkmen leader who, in the 1260s and 1270s, led raiders into the Byzantine coastlands of Caria in south-western Anatolia, taking the country around Milas, Pechin and Miletus. He founded the beylik that bore his name, one of the first Turkish maritime principalities, whose fleets raided the Aegean islands until the Ottomans finally absorbed it in the 15th century.
