Mensheviks

1903–1921 · 20th century

The Mensheviks were the moderate faction of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party, formed when it split with Lenin's Bolsheviks in 1903. Led by Julius Martov and others, they favoured a broad party and a bourgeois-democratic stage before socialism. They took part in the Provisional Government of 1917, governed independent Georgia from 1918 to 1921 and were suppressed by the Soviet regime.
