The Armenians are a people of the Armenian highlands with their own language and Christian church. Armenian merchants played major roles in long-distance trade, especially in the Safavid Empire, where Abbas I resettled them at New Julfa in Isfahan. Armenians also served as soldiers and officials in the Fatimid Caliphate, and in the Ottoman Empire they were a major community until the genocide of 1915.
