Isfahan

Isfahan is a city in central Iran with a long history as a political and cultural centre. It was a capital under the Seljuk Empire and was rebuilt as the splendid capital of the Safavid Empire under Shah Abbas I. Its capture by Afghan forces in 1722 ended effective Safavid rule, setting the stage for the Afsharid and Zand empires.
