Fourteenth Dynasty of Egypt
Origins
As the Thirteenth Dynasty lost its grip, around 1725 BCE a separate line of kings established itself in the eastern Delta, probably at Avaris (Tell el-Dab'a), where a large population of Levantine origin had settled. Manetho placed the dynasty at Xois in the western Delta, but most scholars now locate it at Avaris.
Rule and society
Very little is known. The best-attested king, Nehesy, whose name means 'the Nubian', left monuments at Avaris and Tell el-Muqdam and honoured Seth as lord of Avaris. Scarabs with royal names suggest a series of short reigns. The dynasty controlled the Delta's trade with the Levant, and its population buried their dead in Canaanite fashion, with donkeys and bronze weapons.
Decline and legacy
The kingdom seems to have been weakened by famine and plague, and around 1650 BCE it was replaced by the Hyksos rulers of the Fifteenth Dynasty of Egypt, who also made Avaris their capital.
Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
