Bellovesus

legendary, c. 600 BCE · 7th century BCE

Bellovesus was a legendary Gallic leader, nephew of King Ambigatus of the Bituriges, who according to Livy led a great migration of Celts across the Alps into northern Italy around 600 BCE. Livy says his followers defeated the Etruscans near the Ticino and founded Mediolanum, modern Milan. The story reflects later Roman memory of Celtic settlement in the Po valley.
