Nantes

Also known as Condevicnum, Portus Namnetum

Nantes is a city of western France on the lower Loire, about 50 km from the Atlantic. Beginning as the Gallo-Roman port of Condevicnum, or Portus Namnetum, of the Namnetes, it became a bishopric and a seat of the dukes of Brittany. In 1598 Henry IV issued the Edict of Nantes there, and in the 18th century it was France's leading slave-trading port.
