Rennes
Rennes is the capital of Brittany in north-western France, at the confluence of the Ille and the Vilaine. It began as Condate, chief town of the Gaulish Redones, and became a Roman civitas capital. In the Middle Ages its counts contested the Breton ducal title with Nantes and the dukes were crowned in its cathedral; after the union with France it housed the Parliament of Brittany, created in 1554.
