Peter I, Duke of Brittany

c. 1187–1250 · 13th century · Also known as Peter Mauclerc

Peter Mauclerc was a French prince of the House of Dreux who ruled Brittany from 1213 to 1237 through his marriage to the heiress Alix of Thouars. He strengthened ducal power against the Breton barons and bishops, which earned him his nickname, and joined baronial revolts against the regency of Blanche of Castile. He handed the duchy to his son John I in 1237 and died in 1250 after Louis IX's crusade in Egypt.
