Luxeuil Abbey

c. 590 · 6th century · Also known as Abbey of Luxeuil

Luxeuil Abbey was a monastery founded by the Irish missionary Columbanus around 590 at Luxeuil, in the foothills of the Vosges in Burgundy. It became one of the most influential monasteries of Merovingian Gaul, training monks who founded many further houses under Columbanus's strict rule. Columbanus was expelled around 610 after quarrelling with King Theuderic II and his grandmother Brunhild, but the abbey flourished for centuries.
