Chlothar I

c. 497–561 · 6th century · Also known as Clotaire I, Chlothar the Old

Chlothar I was a Merovingian king of the Franks, the youngest son of Clovis I. On his father's death in 511 he received a share of the kingdom around Soissons, and with his brothers he conquered the Burgundian kingdom in 534 and took part in the conquest of Thuringia. Outliving his brothers and nephews, some of whom he murdered, he reunited the Frankish realm from 558, which was divided again among his sons in 561.
