Kingdom of Paris
Origins
On the death of Clovis in 511 the Kingdom of the Franks was shared among his four sons. Childebert I received the lands around Paris, together with the Channel coast and later parts of Aquitaine and Burgundy.
Rule and society
Childebert ruled for nearly fifty years, campaigning against the Kingdom of the Burgundians and the Visigoths in Spain, from where he brought back relics of Saint Vincent. For them he founded the abbey later called Saint-Germain-des-Prés. He joined his brother Chlothar I in murdering their nephews, the sons of Chlodomer of Orléans.
Decline and legacy
Childebert died without sons in 558, and Chlothar I briefly reunited the Frankish lands. In 561 Paris passed to Chlothar's son Charibert I, and after Charibert's death in 567 his kingdom was divided among his brothers, with Paris shared between them.
